The Tobacco Retailer Environment in North Carolina

Tobacco prevention and control advocates across two counties within Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch Region 3 North Carolina partnered with Counter Tools in 2025 to conduct environmental scans of a select number of tobacco retailers within their communities.  Scans completed in Surry County included a purposeful representative sample of tobacco retailers near schools, with a specific focus on vape retailers within specified zip codes.

Number of Known Retailers = 134

Number of Surry County Retailers Visited = 54

This effort included a review of:

·       Characteristics of the retail landscape

·       Price and promotional activities

·       Focus on youth/school location

·       Flavors and Menthol

·       Compliance/FDA Checks
