The Surry County Office of Substance Abuse Recovery (SCOSAR) is dedicated to empowering Surry County residents on their journey toward health and wellness improvement, self-direction, and lasting recovery from substance use disorders.
SCOSAR offers a multifaceted approach to support, encompassing Early Intervention and Prevention, Transportation, and Recovery to Work (RTW) services. A cornerstone of its efforts is the Surry Transition Project (STP), a cooperative program operating in partnership with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and Surry County Detention Center.
STP provides vital Substance Use and Recovery to Work/Education Services to both male and female detainees. This comprehensive program includes Substance Use Screening, Assessment, Group Counseling, and Pre-Release Planning. A significant benefit for successful participants is the opportunity to receive six months of post-release support, fostering sustained recovery beyond detention.
STP participants are expected to uphold fundamental principles crucial for effective engagement and positive outcomes:
• Honesty: Emphasizing truthfulness in all interactions with counselors, fellow participants, and staff.
• Respect: Promoting dignity in how participants treat peers, counselors, and staff members.
• Confidentiality: Upholding the privacy of all participants by refraining from disclosing personal information shared during sessions.
• Accountability: Encouraging participants to take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and active participation in the program.
• Commitment to Recovery: Fostering sincere engagement in the counseling process, with a focus on sobriety and continuous self-improvement.
Through these robust services and guiding principles, SCOSAR and the STP program are committed to supporting individuals in Surry County to achieve lasting change and build healthier, more self-directed lives.
