March 2021 Data Updates


Below are SUD Intervention Team Activities Updates for 2020-2021 and Surry County EMS Substance Related Events from 2009-2021 updated through March 2021. Readers will also find additional information related to numbers of Opioid Prescriptions per 100 people in Surry County and new comparisons of data traditionally collected.


  • Intervention Team Referrals now equal a total of 197 from January 2020 to March 31, 2021. Referrals numbered 17 in February 2021 and increased 82% to 31 in March 2021.

  • Reported Surry County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Substance Abuse Events increased 29% month over month. Surry EMS responded to 35 Substance Abuse Events in February 2021 and 49 in March 2021. At the current rate the number of Substance Abuse Events will exceed last year (2020) which was also the highest year ever for related calls.

  • The number of Substance Abuse Related Deaths reported by Surry County Emergency Medical Services already number 15. If the current rate remains constant, it is projected that Surry County will suffer 60 substance use related deaths during the calendar year. This number will exceed the number of deaths in 2017, when a reported 55 related deaths occurred, the highest in recent memory.

  • According to Centers for Disease Control Data the number of Opioid Prescriptions Per 100 People has decreased from 169 in 2009 to 61 in the last year reported of 2019. Yet on the number of Surry County Emergency Medical Services Substance Abuse Event calls increased year over year for all but two of the ten years during the same time period. EMS calls related to substance use events have increased every year since 2016.
